Single Review | Brodie Barclay | Our Love Ignites

Gloriously warm, colourful vocals captivate me from the very first second of Brodie Barclay‘s latest release ‘Our Love Ignites’. His voice listens like a well-aged whiskey, soft with a deep and slightly rough edge.

Brodie Barclay used the pandemic to start recording his own music after having featured on a host of electronic tracks by artists and producers all across Europe. He records his songs in his flat in Edinburgh and uses golden guitar lines with gentle vocals as the building blocks for his driving pop songs. His lyricism is personal and complex, and describes personal life events, yet sounds like they have been written for me and you. I met Brodie by accident at Edinburgh Castle, where he told me about his music, and once I listened, I was hooked.

‘Our Love Ignites’

‘Our Love Ignites’ is a song I have heard him play before, at Sofar Sounds in Newcastle. Mixed, mastered, and polished, it sounds even better than I remember it. It is a song that pulls on my heartstrings, and makes me blush at the same time. ‘Our Love Ignites’ is the sexiest love song Brodie has ever written, and will probably ever write. The song talks about the give and take of a healthy relationship and finding the balance that makes everyone involved feel the kind of love they need. Its rhythm and chorus are true hooks, making ‘Our Love Ignites’ an earworm easy to remember and sing along to. Remembering the stripped back live version of the song, I get goosebumps all over again. It is his passionate rendition of not just this one, but all of his songs, mixed with a healthy dose of light-heartedness and a joke here and there, that makes Brodie so fun to watch live. I am keeping a close eye on his socials making sure I’m not missing any news on upcoming live shows!

‘Crumbling’

His upcoming EP ‘Crumbling’ will consist of five songs, and ‘Our Love Ignites’ is the second he has released so far. Opener of the EP, ‘Woke Up In A Hurricane’, was released first and truly teased with its catchy, softly thumping pop soundscape! I can’t wait to hear ‘Crumbling’ in full, but until its released my hunger will be stilled by ‘Woke Up In A Hurricane’ and ‘Our Love Ignites’!
