At nearly three minutes long, the latest single by Glasgow funk and soul group Tom McGuire & the Brassholes packs a punch with a retro 70s influenced funk feeling.
The band’s impeccable musicianship and unique sound, which is unlike that of their musical peers, sets them apart.
The finger picked baseline, strong beat and horns with the repeated refrain of “Why so serious? / Why you gotta be so serious all the time?” adds to the playful, upbeat sound of the track. It would slip easily into the Snowfall TV Series soundtrack alongside the likes of The Fixx, Funky 4 + 1 and Fatback Band.
However this is no pastiche; it is an infectious hyper-funk track fit for today. The lyrics encourage the listeners to loosen up, making it perfect for a wild Saturday night party. When listening to the song, it’s hard not to start dancing and signing along.
As the first follow up single to their sophomore album, ‘Why So Serious?’ is an explosive comeback from the group. The song is available to listen to on streaming services now. The band are playing a sold out performance at London’s Jazz Cafe on December the 10th – connect with them on their socials to be first to know about future concerts.
