SINGLE REVIEW | STARSKY-RAE | CALL IT

Words by Annie Barber.

Sam Bancroft’s newest project, Starsky-Rae, has allowed the artist to explore new territory and experiment with a fresh sound. His latest single, titled ‘Call It’, is the most recent release from his upcoming debut album, ‘Taste the Bruise’ and a brilliant example of his innovative approach to making music.

The song starts off with soft delicate synth, which then builds up into a louder sound, as a prominent bassline is introduced to the mix. The song slips between these floaty moments into the louder, fuller parts, owing to its experimental production. In the bridge, the song has a grittier sound as Bancroft’s vocals are at their strongest. The track’s indie dream-pop sound gives it a unique edge, and the soft vocals compliment the dreamy music perfectly.

The lyrics, vulnerable and honest, are an insight into “the mind of an emotional masochist”. With lines like “Treat me like a medicine / I’ll never ever make you cry”, and the repeated refrain “Waiting for you to call it”, Bancroft is exposing to the listener his mixed up feelings.

The single is now available to listen to on streaming sites, and the video for it is up on YouTube. Make sure to listen to Starsky-Rae’s album, ‘Taste the Bruise’, too, when it’s released.
