SINGLE REVIEW | DEAD PONY | MK NOTHING

‘Nu’ Era Dead Pony has arrived.

9 months after the release of their critically acclaimed debut EP War Boys, Glasgow post punk quartet release their first new music of 2023 with EDM inspired rock anthem MK Nothing.

Sticking with their trademark heavy opener/soft verse/dynamic chorus format, MK Nothing captures everything Dead Pony have become loved for over the past few years then takes it to another dimension. This new song is an auditory explosion of crunchy guitars, hook driven synth and catchy vocal glitches. Frontwoman Anna is characteristically spellbinding. There’s a devilish sweetness about her energy and vocal style that is both endearing yet compelling.

MK Nothing came from a daydream about a wicked and cool girl who was MK Ultra mind controlled to go out and assassinate bad guys of the world.”

“It’s the first time I’ve written lyrics where it felt like the story was already there in my head, in vivid, comic book colour, and all we had to do was put it down on paper.

Dead Pony are not only aiming for a genre-bending fresher sound, but their collective band image has clearly been developed with this renewed Dead Pony formation. Like the Mad Max mood of the War Boys EP, this new single invites a different concept. Appearing in the promotional shots as a Matrix-esque quartet, the release of MK Nothing and accompanying music confirms the bands direction has taken an intriguing futuristic twist. There’s lots to unpick with the Nu Metal inspired music video. Filled with Easter eggs that I’m still attempting to read, I’ll leave the interpretation to the band themselves who I am sure have a lot left to reveal about this upcoming debut album to come.

MK Nothing moves Dead Pony away from their punkier rock roots towards a heavier industrial sound, however, the pathway suits them. They still convey the same high energy, tongue in cheek attitude that reassures fans they haven’t sold out and are merely capturing the moment and feeding a hungry crowd the adrenaline they need.

Dead Pony head out on their first full UK tour later this year but you can also catch them supporting legendary synth pop trio CHVRCHES this weekend at Glasgow’s iconic Barrowland Ballroom and at a whole lot of UK festivals over the summer.
