“Kept the crowd entertained and dancing along.”

As part of Independent Venue Week, I headed to Sneaky Pete’s once again to catch two acts I will definitely go and see again. An infusion of dance and bass, as well as a dedicated crowd made the night an unforgettable one. Gigs like this one prove just why we need venues like Sneaky Pete’s. The talent that comes from such gigs is immense and ASTER YVS and Brothertiger prove just that.

Support: ASTER YVS

Taking to the stage first were ASTER YVS, a trio whose dance infused setlist captivated and maintained the attention of the crowd. Easy listening records were the primary theme during ASTER YVS’ set. Playing tracks like 2023 single ‘Crimson‘ as well as latest tune, ‘Listen‘, the trio brought to life, and transported the crowd through, an array of sounds.

These different moods were portrayed through the intricate and delicate construction that gives the band their unique sound. Even with an eclectic discography, ASTER YVS still retain an individualistic approach to songwriting and were able to push this through their performance. If you’re a fan of acts like Gravelle and Lo Rays, then ASTER YVS will be perfect for you. They were able to immerse the crowd and everyone will have found at least one song by the support band that they enjoyed. I’ve certainly found a new addition to my playlists!

Headliner: Brothertiger

Headlining the venue that evening was Brothertiger, the alias and musical project of John Jagos. Taking to the stage as a solo artist, it was impressive seeing how effortless he made playing his tunes look. His performance demanded attention as he kept the crowd entertained and dancing along from start to finish.

His easy listening style isn’t melancholy. Instead, he played a huge range of different tracks and everyone was bound to find one they liked. If I could summarise his headline slot in one word, it would be vibrant. The blue light throughout his set provided a state of tranquility alongside this vibrancy, further adding to the atmosphere of his songs.

Playing a setlist full of originals and throwing in a couple of covers, Brothertiger provided an air of nostalgia. Whilst I wasn’t around in the 80s, his sound is reflective of such a period. This makes his choice of covers very appropriate with him playing his own rendition of Tears For Fears‘ ‘Everybody Wants To Rule The World‘. This went down very successfully, being met with cheers and many voices singing along.

Alongside his cover of 80s icons, Tears For Fears, Brothertiger’s original material was also met with approval. Tracks from 2015 album “Out of Touch” like fan-favourite ‘High Tide‘ were hits with the crowd, with dedicated fans dancing along. I would definitely go and see both acts live again, and they’re talents that I think everyone should see if they can!
