GIG REVIEW | NEAVE MARR | POETRY CLUB | 27.11.24

Scottish rising alt-pop artist Neave Marr graced the Poetry Club with her stunning debut headline sold-out show on 27th November.

Sheffield star Bethany Grace opened the night with an engaging selection of pop ballads, followed by Holly J who warmed up the crowd with her latest track ‘Swimming’, ‘Touch ID’ and a catchy cover of ‘Stockholm Syndrome’ by One Direction. Holly J, based in Glasgow, also teased an upcoming single to be released in January, creating anticipation for new things to come.

Neave Marr elegantly took the stage at 9 pm in a dazzling black lace outfit, kicking off her set with her unreleased track ‘Nah Nah Nah’. You could tell from the start how much the gig meant to both the fans and the artist, with Marr expressing her sheer excitement and appreciation for holding her first ever headline at the iconic venue in the SWG3.

Further unreleased tracks ‘Strangers’ and ‘Online With My Ex’ highlighted Marr’s effortless ability to combine intricate storytelling with engaging stage presence and lyricism. ‘Strangers’ delves into the emotional hardships of parting ways with someone you used to be close with, while ‘Online With My Ex’ explores how social media encourages the temptation to rekindle with past relationships. However, it was ‘Kiss From Me’ that showcased Neave’s full vocal range, leaving a lasting impression.

A special shout-out was dedicated to Neave’s mum around halfway through the set, where the crowd sang Happy Birthday to mark the memorable night. One eager fan, who had travelled from England to be at the special headline event, had requested a cover of ‘When The Party’s Over’ for the night’s gig. Neave not only offered a beautifully raw version of the Billie Eilish track but also devoted the song to the emotional fan in the audience.
