GIG REVIEW | MAXWELL WEAVER & THE FIG LEAVES @NICENSLEAZY

An energetic, crowd-pleasing performance by Maxwell Weaver & The Fig Leaves at NICE N SLEAZY on 27th November.

Singer, songwriter and keys player Maxwell Weaver took centre stage surrounded by his trusty Fig Leaves and together they made sweet sweet music. Maxwell Weaver headlined the gig to promote the new single “Centre of My Eye” which was released earlier that day. Inspired by the swinging sixties, the band merged modern alternative rock with a groovy, upbeat sound.

The band used the Sleazy’s stage to announce another upcoming launch of the single “Where You Wanna Go” which was released 11th December.

“Dream of Love” and the snazzy cover of “Music to Watch Girls By” were particularly enjoyable and inspired some eager dancing in the audience, spurred on by percussionist and ‘bits man’ Joseph Flower. Flower also introduced a new unreleased track “International Celebrity” which had a funky, boogaloo sound.

Weaver and the gang have a thoroughly contemporary overtone paired with a deliciously familiar doo-wop style, reminiscent of The Ronettes. The electric atmosphere climaxed at the end of the last song, when the crowd cried out for one more tune and lead guitarist Lewis Macpherson whipped his top off, gaining whoops and cheers. To appease the audience’s demands the group played “Forgive Me Now” and rounded off the incredible set on a high.

Maxwell Weaver & The Fig Leaves brought a sensational energy and the crowd matched it, making this a very special gig. As a fan of Maxwell Weaver & The Fig Leaves, I have been to many of their gigs and I can safely say this has been my favourite so far. To say that I am excited for what’s to come would be an understatement!
