GIG REVIEW | FLAT PARTY w/ YELLOW HELEN @ BROADCAST

Broadcast was brought to life by Flat Party and Yellow Helen on 16th November!

Yellow Helen

Yellow Helen offered a stripped back and organic support to Flat Party. The band, which was formed in the seaside town of Dunbar, has continued to upgrade their sound and become more well-known and loved in the Scottish music scene. The group bounce between genres with ease but usually land somewhere between psychedelic and indie rock.

Despite being down a member, the band were still able to deliver a cohesive and engaging set. Working well as a group, they created a light and fun atmosphere which enhanced their tracks. The trio brought a warm and playful energy to Broadcast which had the audience laughing and singing along.

Playing some released tunes such as ‘I Know’ and ‘All This to Say’ alongside some newer unreleased tracks highlighted the band’s extensive range. With the newer tracks really showing off their maturity and achieving a deeper, more interesting sound.

Lead singer and guitarist, Lewis Macpherson hinted heavily, after playing ‘Helium’ and ‘Feels Good to Be Alive’ that these songs will be released as singles in the near future. I am excited for these new tracks to continue to diversify their discography.

Yellow Helen were a well-chosen support as they warmed up the audience with their spirited set ahead of headliner Flat Party.

Flat Party

Flat Party oozed confidence as they made their mark in Glasgow, playing Broadcast as part of their UK tour. The London-based band, consisting of six members looked a tad squished on the Broadcast stage. However, they played cohesively and collaboratively to enhance their sound. The band commanded the stage and seemingly enjoyed the intimate nature of the venue. Flat Party are quintessentially indie pop, with a slightly artistic edge which is setting them apart from other emerging indie bands.

Singer Jack Lawther had a vibrant stage presence which got the audience dancing early in the set. The audience particularly enjoyed the recently released single ‘Hindsight’ and were dancing wildly, spurred on by the pithy lyrics and the satisfying melodies. Lawther bounced between the stage and the audience with an endearing arrogance.

The guitar was noticeably strong live, with two guitarists and a bass player creating a full and harmonious sound. The size of the group allowed for experimentation, enabling the guitarists to bash out some strong solos. The music filled the room and immersed the audience in the emotion of the songs. Despite the upbeat vibe, there were some melancholic moments such as in the more low-key track ‘I’m bored, give me love’.

Flat Party played an exhilarating set, and I am glad to have seen them so early on in their career journey. I hope to see them again filling an even bigger venue and owning it.
