SINGLE REVIEW | NATIONAL PLAYBOYS | SCARLETT

Sensational emerging band from Edinburgh are set to release their second single, Scarlett. National Playboys are based in central Scotland, who’s brooding music and surrealistic storytelling is growing rapidly throughout the country.

The band have already played in several well-known Scottish venues, including King Tuts and The Flying Duck. National Playboys’ name continues to spread, even gaining the attention of Lewis Capaldi himself.

Following the success of their debut single Red Spy which released earlier this year, fans are itching to hear more from the band. Scarlett is set to release on 22 September and was written by vocalist Kyle McFarlane. Their latest single will tell a story that started a year before National Playboys had even formed.

Have you ever felt that your life was lacking and desperately tried to fill the void with material substances? Scarlett dives into this theme, it’s about searching for happiness in material things, things that are void of human substance, and the inevitable unhappiness that will return.

The band said: “We have sought to bring these themes together in this dynamic, atmospheric and lively new song.”

Using an alt-rock style for this track works with the message and themes that it explores. With an Artic Monkeys/The Killers type-feel, Scarlett is injected full of an infectious energy.

Vocals ranging from gritty, low tones to raw screams you are taken on a rollercoaster with the pace of the song. Instrumentals don’t allow for a moment’s rest either, keeping you invested as they match the vocals, slowing to a thrum in the background before ramping up to full-hearted riffs.

Full of angst, emotion, and passion, Scarlett is a phenomenal second single from National Playboys. They are a band to watch as their career in the music industry expands, I can’t wait to see what they do next.

Scarlett will be available to stream on 22 September. The band also have an upcoming performance at Edinburgh’s Big Day Out festival on 22 September, a perfect way to celebrate the release of their latest single.
