SINGLE REVIEW | MICKEY 9s | WAVES OF LOVE

Glasgow band Mickey 9s will never be a band to be defined by only one genre. They mix multiple styles to create their own vibe, one in which makes the crowd go wild.

The bands latest single Waves of Love dropped on the 1st of February and it’s the first from their much anticpated fourth studio album ‘Impressive Snake’ which debuts in May.

For anyone who has been around the music scene for long enough you’ll have seen and heard a lot from the Mickey 9s having plugged away hard over the years; selling out venues across Glasgow and touring up and down the country whilst putting out three albums and showcasing at festivals such as Eden Festival and Kelburn Garden Party.

Previous single Moments Go was single of the week on BBC Radio Scotland’s afternoon show and I’m sure their latest single will be well received with similar attention.

Waves of Love isn’t like any of the band’s other tunes that have come before it; expanding again their musical horizons, creatively playing with different genres and attracting new listeners in the process.

This track is really bass heavy, Dave creates a really cool funk driven groove which you can’t help but move along too. The bass line and backing vocals building up the song it’s like an 80s disco trance tune. There is something simplistic in the drum beat which adds real texure to the song, it would have been too easy for Ross to do mad fills and ‘show off’ but I feel as though he’s highligthing that, sometimes simple is best and who doesn’t like a bit of cowbell right?

During the last minute of the track the guitar part picks up and the song builds, this is going to be proper good song live and will get an ace reaction from the crowd.

Love will wash us away, drag us from shore and out to sea.
Waves will hold me under, drown me in love.

Mickey 9s have previously won Scotlands Best Live Act at the Scottish Alternative Music Awards so they are a band not to be missed. With their world tour of Scotland happening througout the month of February be sure to check them out.
