SINGLE REVIEW | DECLAN WELSH AND THE DECADENT WEST | I DON’T KNOW WHY

One of Glasgow’s most articulate, prolific and sincere bands have came out with moody yet anthemic new single, ‘I Don’t Know Why’.

What’s the Score?

‘Declan Welsh and the Decadent West’, are a unique outfit for many reasons. One quality that strikes me as the most alluring is that, unlike many of their contemporaries on the Glasgow scene, the four-piece have released a full length album (and a great one at that!).

However, now that 2019 debut, ‘Cheaply Bought, Expensively Sold’, is growing far behind them, the ‘West’, are presented with the age-old problem of the follow up. The first single of album number two (aptly titled… ‘2’), ‘Mercy’, was a defiant introduction to the new era. ‘King of My Head’, was an inoffensive, earworm of a tune and new single, ‘I Don’t Know Why’, begins on a entirely different note…

The Tune

As teased on the band’s last EP, ‘Impermanency’, the boys are heading towards a more atmospheric, shoegaze sound, musically. Welsh paints quite a hopeless picture of existentialism and broken relationships through his astute, meditative lyrics. There’s a great comforting sadness in this track that goes over the listener like a warm blanket and stays in the head like a bittersweet memory. Speaking of the track, Welsh had this to say:

“It’s a story from different characters’ perspectives – about how we cope with things ending. What we reach for. And how there’s such a massive amount of life that’s impossible to know, sometimes the only response is to walk into the unknown and embrace it”.

– Declan Welsh

Wrapping It All Up!

Regardless of it’s morose nature, ‘I Don’t Know Why’, is incredibly catchy and I’m sure will become another anthem in the bands ever growing cannon on well written pop songs. So… Here’s to album number two, with songs like this, I couldn’t think of many bands that are as hard working or deserving!

Don’t just take my word for it, have a listen for yourself!
