SINGLE REVIEW | ONE GLASS | MURDO MITCHELL

Glasgow’s most loved indie/folk ‘busker’ and songwriter Murdo Mitchell is back with his latest single ‘One Glass’.

This track takes a slightly different direction to music that preceds it. The skillfull use of diminished chords on the guitar and piano with a shuffle on the drums gives this track a bouncy jazz feel. This all mixed with Murdo Mitchell’s raw and heartfelt Scottish accent makes for interesting listening.

Mitchell says; “My strengths are, it’s my rhythm guitar, my acoustic playing, like a kind of troubadour just giving a performance” ; If you have followed any of his other releases or been lucky to see him at a show then there is no denying that Murdo is unique and captivating in both his song writing and performances.

It’s evident that Murdo Mitchell takes influences from guitarists and songwriters from through the years, Glen Hansard who Murdohad the opportunity to tour with last year on some of his European dates but also more indie/folk/pop artists like Ben Howard. Mitchell can’t be pinned down to one genre which is what makes new music exciting as nothing that has been released sounds the same except for the easily identifyable Scottish accent and powerful story telling song writing.

One Glass is about a certain time in life when you get caught up in the fast pace of spending too much of yourself, going out too much and convincing yourself your doing a lot when doing nothing. Written when I first moved to London. It's a song for myself and to all those I met at the bar and chat to after I play the gigs.

On first listen it reminded me of the epilogue in La La Land with the strings and upbeat jazz beats, I could imagine dancing around to this, it’s certainly a toe tapping tune. I was excited for this single release and I was far from disappointed. Murdo Mitchell is a Scottish gem who is one to be watched. So much raw talent, passion and ambition.

Murdo Mitchell heads out in a mini tour throughout the UK in March and is hitting Aberdeen & Glasgow. I highly recommend you go grab some tickets and head on down, there is something pretty spectacular and gripping during his live performances.
