SINGLE REVIEW | MEGAN BLACK | SWEET BISEXUAL (RE-IMAGINED)

Self proclaimed ‘All Bluesy and Gay’ West Lothian singer songwriter Megan Black has dropped a brand new single with song Sweet Bisexual.

For those not familiar with Megan Black yet, the young queer artist has been making waves across the local and even global music scene. From being nominated just aged 19 for a prestigious BBC Scotland Singer/Songwriter award to picking up Best Original Song at the LA Independent Short Film Awards for the track Hang Out Dry. Megan Black is tipped to be one to watch in 2023.

For those already acquainted with Megan’s music, Sweet Bisexual may sound vaguely familiar and they would be right to think so. This new single is a remastered, reimagined version of the song of the same name from the 2022 album Deadly is the Woman. A nostalgic nod towards The Rocky Horror Picture Show song of a similar name, Sweet Bisexual is satirical take on her own misunderstood experience as a queer woman in a modern mixed up world. Theatrical, fun and relatable, it’s hard not to identify with Megan’s misfit message.

Produced by Scott Bathgate (Lo Rays, Silvi, KLEO) this rendition of Sweet Bisexual takes the original to a new dimension. Megan’s passionate vocal delivery cascades with confidence, leading the listener by the nose throughout. The new production still delivers the same bluesy approach heard on the album but brings with it a fresh punk edge that keeps the song fresh.

With it’s 70’s rock inspired guitar licks and Stevie Nicks style deliverance it’s important to emphasise that Megan is a contemporary artist. What she offers is the safe familiarity of nostalgia with modern flare and sweet sophistication. The ‘hippy dippy drag queen’ has raised the bar with Sweet Bisexual and has transformed what was was a strong album opener to a potentially great standalone queer anthem in the making.
