Declan Welsh and The Decadent West’s latest single has a 70s punk sound with a message for our times. On explosive punk track ‘Inaction’, the band criticises political actors and society at large for not taking a stand against the crisis in the Middle East.
With gritty bass, loud guitar, crashing drums and shouty vocals, the track rattles along at a brisk pace until the chorus angrily explodes. At 188bpm, the song has an urgency about it, mirroring the lyrics which call for a timely response to the conflict. The single is reminiscent of music such as that of Wunderhorse, early Fontaines DC and 70s punk legends but packs more of a punch.
The lyrics are a critique of the current political atmosphere in the UK and further afield. The title refers to the ‘inaction’ of politicians, world leaders, and society in the face of conflict. It is also intended to draw attention to the limiting and censoring of freedom of expression, on matters to do with the crisis in the Middle East.
It is a credit to the band that it is not all about the music for them; they also use their lyrics to address and highlight issues which they deem important. The group have been outspoken about and advocated for a free Palestine, previously releasing a track called ‘Walk A Mile in Gaza’, with all proceeds made from the song going towards Islamic Help, a charity which provides aid and support for Gaza.
Declan Welsh and The Decadent West have delivered a scathing take on politics in their latest, incredibly intoxicating track. The single was released via Friction Music on October 11th and is available to listen to on streaming services now.
