SINGLE REVIEW | DECLAN WELSH AND THE DECADENT WEST | FIRST TO KNOW

East Kilbride hailing indie quartet have dropped another brand new single today titled ‘First to Know’.

The fourpiece is fronted by singer, guitarist and lyricist Declan Welsh, and accompanied by his band, The Decadent West, the group have graced stages from Paris to Palestine.

Sold out shows include The Barrowlands Ballroom and last year’s TRNSMT festival, and the band are fresh off a mini-UK tour prior to the release of their highly anticipated sophomore album ‘2’ which will be released on October 27th.

Following other lead tracks ‘I Don’t Know Why’, ‘King Of My Head’ and ‘Mercy’, ‘First to Know’ offers a preliminary taste of what fans can expect from album number two, and judging by what we know so far, you’re in for a treat.

The woozy new cut kicks off with relaxed drums and catchy riffs before the introduction of Welsh’s vocals; sonically, it makes for an easy listen in an (almost) four-minute demonstration of the group’s mastery of sounds that lets your mind drift off to a faraway place.

The track’s lyrics touch on themes of being at rock bottom, of dampened spirits, which offers a stark contrast with the relaxed sonic vibe of the track; these elements work in tandem to effectively create an enjoyable listening experience.

Welsh said of the new track: “It’s a song about feeling as low as you can and wanting out. About giving up. The “go”-ing in “if I was ever to go you know…” is a permanent exit. It’s a glib chorus, using that kinda understatement to make quite a scary point.

“Sometimes when we can’t find enough reasons to carry on for our own sakes, it’s the people we love that keep us hanging on. The music is chilled, the lyrics are heavy. I like the juxtaposition.”

Don’t forget to stream ‘First to Know’ below and if you’re heading to TRNSMT next month make sure you catch their set on the Main Stage, it’s sure to be a memorable one.
