SINGLE REVIEW | COLM O’SULLIVAN | SUNRISE

As the days draw in and the nights get colder, it sometimes gets harder to remember that there are brighter days ahead. Fear not though as Colm O’Sullivan stunning debut single ‘Sunrise’ serves as a refreshing reminder of this fact.

Starting the song as he means to go on, the song is jaunty and fun. Reflective of folk bands such as global stars Mumford & Sons with instruments that are heard throughout like the banjo and the penny whistle, sets the bar for the high-standards that O’Sullivan is already reaching.

Crafting the song into something special, the Irish singer’s tender and poignant lyricism also deserves to be highlighted. Examples including “darkest days are coming but don’t be scared just remember that I’ll be there” and title lyric “I see the sunrise” serve as a beautiful reminder to keep on going no matter what life chucks at you because it does get better.

The delicate and subtle use of strings (you really need to be paying attention in order to catch it) further adds to this beautiful poignancy that’s known as ‘Sunrise’. With its fast-paced nature ensuring that you’re gripped from the first note to the last, it leaves you feeling slightly blue when the whirlwind eventually comes to an end.

Becoming quickly cemented as one of my favourite tunes of Autumn, ‘Sunrise’ is a burst of sunshine. A refreshing reminder to all those who are lucky enough to listen that it the sun will rise from behind the dark clouds again.
