GIG REVIEW | TOM WALKER | O2 ACADEMY GLASGOW | 01.05.24

Scottish Singer/ Songwriter Tom Walker kicked off the second night of his two sold out hometown shows for the ‘I Am Tour’ at Glasgow’s O2 Academy on Wednesday night.

Opening the night were Irish trio, Kingfishr. Receiving so much love so far from home, I honestly can’t remember the last time I saw an opener get such a reaction from the crowd!

The band made memories tonight as they hopped the barrier into the middle of the crowd to play ‘Shot In The Dark’ – a stunningly beautiful track made even more special by the lights being lowered and audience using their phones as torches, creating an ambience I’m yet to experience from a headline artist in such a big venue.

The band ended on ‘Caroline’ with a crowd singalong at the start. Great ending song in my opinion. Before they left the stage they announced they would be back in Glasgow in November, with a headline show at SWG3. Now for the main event, Tom Walker. Starting off the show with real attitude and power with his songs ‘Holy Ghost’ and ‘Rapture’ back to back. Started out slow with one big continuous build up, creating an incredible atmosphere throughout the room.

Incredible harmonies from the backing singers brought depth to Tom’s impressive vocal range. His energy is something I didn’t expect to see that night. You could see the joy in his face as the crowd sang every single word back to him. The production in Walker’s sets are remarkable and help bring the show to life. For such a big artist he still manages to connect with the crowd, making everyone feel like part of the show!

Up next was his song ‘Wait For You’. Another clear crowd favourite to which he brought out his backing singer Laura Oakes – what a voice! Great Duet, back and forth ending in another huge guitar solo.

The set was beautifully put together from start to finish. Adding in some fan favourites including ‘You And I’ where he told the crowd the last night in Glasgow was LOUD, so they had to beat it tonight.. Starting off with a bit of crowd participation back and forward, you could see the big grin on Tom’s face.. and my god they were loud!

Ending the night with ‘Leave A Light On’ was always going to happen, as it boasts a wild 600 million + streams on Spotify. From start to finish, one of the most energetic set’s I’ve seen in a long time. This didn’t feel like any other Tom Walker gig I’d been to in the past. Massive energy really made it feel like he was trying to prove something.. and it worked.
