Dazzling pop-star Lydia May brought an incredible intimate solo-performance to Nice N’ Sleazy’s club music venue in Glasgow on Friday 9th August.
Located in Glasgow’s hotspot for live music on Sauchiehall Street, the small downstairs club room was transformed into a beautiful live set. Decorations of red bows along with a merchandise table scattered with postcards, signed posters, and stickers, created a perfect set for the opening night of the Lifesaver Tour.
Supporting act Frankie left a short but touching performance with singles such as Landmine, recently released 2024 single Days Like This, and a Taylor Swift cover of You’re On Your Own Kid.

Soon after, May graced the stage with a unique and sparkling outfit – a long black dress with flowing layers, a fluffy red hat paired with red heeled boots, and, of course, decorated with elegant bows and ribbons on her guitar. Loyal Lydia May fans, known as the ‘Maybelles’, matched the outfit theme of the tour with several wearing red, cherries, and stars in their outfits.
Musical inspirations such as Lorde, Adele, Katy Perry, and not to mention May’s love for musical theatre, is prominently seen in her art. Her mythical and transcendent pop style would best suit lovers of Chappell Roan, Alessi Rose, and the likes of Chloe Charlotte, who also supported May on her Birmingham date of the Lifesaver Tour.
Kicking off her performance with popular single Social Cues, May detailed the aim of the show is to bring the audience into her bedroom – the place May began writing songs in her childhood. The show acts as a showcase of May’s life progression from songwriting at home at a young age to accomplishing her first UK headline tour, all while being displayed within the four walls of the intimate live music venue in the heart of Glasgow city.
On many occasions throughout the set, Lydia May provided intricate and relatable backstories behind the songs played on the setlist, allowing the audience to feel a closer relation. For example, unreleased song The Right, played around halfway through the set, delved deeper into May’s personal detachments with friends and relationships. Several lyrics questioned whether she felt welcome in their home, and if the relationship was truly reciprocal.

Lifesaver, the self-titled track of the tour, involved a fan-made project where eager attendees held up signs that read “You are our Lifesaver”, creating a wholesome moment toward the end of the set. Interactive online TikTok livestreams meant May felt a prior connection to some fans in the crowd beforehand, however, with the Scottish show being the opening night of May’s first tour, it was clear to see how much the tour meant to the artist as well as the fans to connect in-person.

Notable highlights of the set included a cover of the 1968 comedy musical ‘Funny Girl’. May’s love for musical theatre was channelled beautifully through this performance. This was accompanied by a further cover of the modern gay-pop classic ‘Good Luck, Babe!’ by Chappell Roan, with the audience joining in singing the lyrics. This iconic solo-performance set a buzzing atmosphere for the remainder of the set.
The Glasgow Lifesaver stop of the tour closed with a wholesome meet and greet outside the venue, where fans exchanged friendship bracelets and took pictures with May. With an upcoming single ‘You’ve Got This Kid’, Lydia May is an exciting emerging pop star to watch out for in 2024.
