Gig Review | Kirsteen Harvey | King Tuts Wah Wah Hut, Glasgow | 17.12.2022

Kirsteen king tuts

Kirsteen Harvey was performing at King Tuts on Saturday 17th December as a solo acoustic act for a double celebration. Not only was it her last gig of the year but also her first time playing King Tuts, which was one of her goals for 2022. Kirsteen was the first one up, supporting Tommy McGuire alongside Brodie Barclay.

Though it’s never easy to go first, her stage presence and confidence showed through as soon as she started to play the first chords of the yet unreleased track ‘Sales Pitch’, fingerstyle.
The 23-year-old encourages us to find love for ourselves rather than looking for validation from others as the strumming pattern built up nicely halfway through the song. Kirsteen set the tone for the night. We were in for a treat.

Bringing back a summer feeling with “One More Day”, the young artist took us on a friends’ trip through this feel-good song that features a cheerful melody, reminding me of Californian folk/pop like Colbie Caillat. The country/blues single ‘Time Flies By’ invites us to follow our hearts when trying to figure out if we’re in the right relationship with that person. It was the first song of the set that is already available on all streaming platforms.
‘Life Guard’ and ‘Unpredictable’ showcased perfectly her guitar skills and the command and beauty she has in her vocals.
Since Christmas was just around the corner, we got to enjoy a soulful cover version of “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”, which brought out jazzy nuances in her voice as she definitely won the crowd over. She ended her set with ‘Tongue Tied’, her infectious debut single which calls out the games that people often play and their lack of ability to own up to them.

I know Kirsteen’s music pretty well, but this stripped-back set made me appreciate her music from another angle. I guess that’s what I love the most about the talented singer/songwriter: there are so many colours in her vocals that she can give the vibe she wants to her songs, whether it’s country, pop or even jazzy at times.

Kirsteen Harvey confirmed that 2023 will bring new music to our ears and I’m looking forward to seeing what she has in store for us.
