SINGLE REVIEW | JOE GOODALL | LOOSE THREAD

Out now, this relatable ear-worm of a track will have you hooked

You have to make the most raw content possible.’ That’s singer-songwriter Joe Goodall’s philosophy, and it seems his new single “Loose Thread” has gifted us a straight-talking insight, deep into his unedited relationship trauma.

Fresh from supporting The Kooks (a 4 thousand strong crowd), he’s in an even more promising position to relate even more directly to a growing fanbase, as he looks forward to headlining King Tut’s on 2 August.  And relate is what this single does. At first listen, within 5 seconds, I am already in some sort of analytical situationship with the lyrics.  What’s going on Joe?  Who’s come “running into your life?” And why can’t you have them?

“Loose Thread” (produced by Chris Marshall) is a gorgeous indie-guitar-pop, ear-worm-worthy journey which ebbs and falls us through his shame and self-restraint during the unbearable throes of break-up grief.  The poor boy is facing the temptation of someone new (“who’s this?  She takes the piss, got a low-cut top, craving a kiss”) when he’s still deeply trying to get over a major heartbreak.  Listening to his endeavours to maintain dignity and boundaries (‘I’ve got standards I’ve got to keep’), we can’t help but feel compassion.  He’s trying to have a bit of fun (we think, maybe 3 times?) but, in reality, is struggling to keep himself on an even-keel emotionally.  We’ve all been there, we have all been “one loose thread from falling apart” whether it be in a relationship sense or battling through the stressful logistics of modern life.  It’s real, it’s relatable and it’s ridiculously catchy.

Some may argue that the track’s simplistic structure and basic chords do the twist and turn storytelling lyrics a disservice, but I would say that they give the heart-felt story a nice, stable and accessible pop-style platform.  What’s more, this allows it acoustic (check out his socials @joegoodallmusic) and live big-band versatility.  Joe is as energetic and comfortable on a festival/venue stage, as he is on live radio (Heartland, Lochgoil, Belladrum, Helix Park, SWG3, King Tuts, Live Radio Edinburgh Festival).  His EP “A Series of Safe Spaces” features his most listened-to track to date “Coffee Shop Dates”.

Already this year, he has released “If You Want It (Make It Right)” and “You’re On Your Own, Kid”. Whether you are new to Joe in 2026 or a listener since he burst onto the scene in 2023, there is no doubt that, despite heartbreak, he is driving his own future forward, full-steam ahead*
