Parisian rock band FENCES\\\\ are coming to the UK this April, making a few stops throughout Scotland, and I got to ask them a few questions before they arrive on Friday.
Who’s in the band, and what do you play?
We are a four-piece band, with Gianni on lead vocals and guitar, Felix on vocals and guitar, Mike on vocals and bass, and Loïc on vocals and drums.
How would you describe your music?
We try to make music in our own way, which sounds authentic and faithful to who we are. We try to write catchy yet complex music, powerful and emotional at the same time. We love heavy, distorted guitars as much as sophisticated and epic orchestrations. If you need a simpler way to describe it, we would probably say Alt-Rock (haha).
Different influences?
We all have a different background, from punk rock to metal, but we’re on the same page when it comes to the Scottish rock scene. Frightened Rabbits, The Xcerts, Fatherson, Sucioperro, Twin Atlantic, Mogwai, and of course Biffy Clyro… we could add poppier artists like KT Tunstall, Lewis Capaldi or Chvrches; You guys have something different, that’s for sure!
Best gig to date?
We would say in April 2025 in our hometown, Paris, at Le Petit Bain. We opened for Italian artist Halflives and LostZone. The crowd was amazing. It fueled us with energy.
What are you looking to experience on this tour?
We toured the UK with one of our previous bands and were supposed to play in Glasgow, but the show was cancelled because our van broke down in Chesterfield, England. And as we just said, we’ve always felt attracted to Scotland, so having the opportunity to tour here is something in itself. We are so looking forward to meeting the Scottish audience, sharing the bill with amazing Scottish bands, and giving everything we have on stage.
Who would be your 3 dream festival headliners?
We would say golden age Elton John for the larger-than-life show, Motörhead for their raw energy, and Justice for their mind-blowing sound and epic production.
Advice for someone just starting out in Music?
Save money, learn to produce music yourself, and believe in yourselves because no one else will.
What’s on your Spotify playlist on repeat just now?
“Bastard Hymns” from Excide, “The Weight of the Woods” by Dermot Kennedy, “Better than Romance” by Tubelord, “Music Has The Right To Children” by Boards of Canada.
Favourite snacks for when in the recording studio?
In the studio, we’re fueled by Ricard (a typical drink from the South of France) and Bud. But never before 6pm (5pm UK time), because our producer Bert (from Chunk! No, Captain Chunk!) doesn’t want us to. Before that, we of course drink A LOT of coffee.
Don’t miss them. Catch them at these dates below.
