SINGLE REVIEW | SAMANTHA SHAW | FEATHERS

Hot off the press, Samantha Shaw’s newest single ‘Feathers’ is the latest delight to grace the Scottish folk scene.

A tender and at times melancholic tune, the song is a gentle exploration of growing up and how nothing in this life is permanent; “chasing dreams and city lights / I’m a feather in the wind.”

Starting off slow, there’s a certain charm to it. With highlights including the gentle strumming of acoustic guitars, twinkling pianos and much loved harmonica, the song is peaceful and comforting, a warm blanket for the colder Scottish nights.

Shaw begins to find her voice as the track progresses, growing more powerful and confident by the second. It’s something special being able to listen to the singer-songwriter come out of her shell and find herself. Her rich vocals can be compared to greats like Lizzie Reid, proving just how magnificent this young talent already is and acts as a clear example of Shaw’s cinematic storytelling that shines through on this piece.

‘Feathers’ is a raw and honest song which listeners can find pieces of themselves reflected in and alongside stellar performances already under her belt, like her recent trailblazing gig at Nice N Sleazy in Glasgow, ‘Feathers’ leaves me excited to see where Shaw will go next.
