Single Review | The Wits | Second Thought

A third release from rising stars The Wits. With a highly successful 2023 under their belts, The Wits return with impressive indie ballad ‘Second Thought’.  Produced by Chris Marshall and Ryan Hunter, the track features catchy guitar riffs, snappy drums, and heartfelt lyrics. The track touches on the subject of anxiety and relentless stresses on the shoulders of young adults in the modern world.

The track starts acapella before bursting into to the first verse. Immediately the listener can expect to be captivated by the lyrics:

“Ever feel like you‘ve been here long before,

and I know, I know,

my second thoughts are always misplaced.

Am I yours?

The singular strums of the guitar provide great anticipation throughout the first verse building effortlessly into the chorus. The vocals are impressive throughout but are particularly impressive in the lead up to the chorus. Supported by snappy drums, the lyrics again catch my attention:

I should have been what I’m not.

I can’t get there, I’m everywhere”

Lyricism can be considered a staple feature of The Wits’ limitless talents. Bridging the chorus and the second verse is a heavy drum/guitar rhythmic exit, providing the track with some real grit. It’s a guaranteed head banger. A special quality of the track is the fuzzy electronic effects, especially towards the later stages, which gives the song real depth.

A personal highlight of the track is the breakdown and subsequent build which culminates into a indie rock/electronic fusion which eventually fades the track out to a chorus of “Na na na na’s”. The track is a strong release from the band after impressing massively on the live circuit over the last year, The Wits have transposed the feel of their live sets perfectly into ‘Second Thought’.

Overall the track is another exemplary release from the Wits. Having already featured on ‘This Feelings: Big in 2023’, packing out King Tuts as part of Summer Nights 2023, The Wits are a band on the rise, and the emphatic ‘Second Thought’ will only propel them further.
