SINGLE REVIEW | THE AZURESCENS | THE ISLAND

Breaking into the music scene from West Lothian are The Azurescens who have released their latest single, The Island.

Formed in 2020, this quartet had two years of hard work to endure before COVID-19 restrictions were lifted and they were allowed on stage. Azurescens (pronounced ahh-zoo-ray-sins) is a name derived from a small but strong psychedelic mushroom of the same name.

Influences and gigs

The band have multiple musical influences that can be heard in their work. From Oasis to Pink Floyd, the quartet crafts a diversified and sharp sound from their influences.

Their first gig was a sell-out to the band’s delight. Gary, or Gaz, the guitarist of the band, said: “seeing people reacting to our songs and seeing the songs evolve from what they started as to how they are now has been incredible”.

Continuing their stage presence, The Azurescens have played a range of shows within their local area, as well as being part of a two-day festival at Bathgate’s Regal.

Perhaps the biggest feat for their live performances came earlier this year. The band supported Stone Roses and Simply Red guitarist Aziz Ibriham at Bathgate’s Purple Orange.

Gaz said: “That was mad for us, as soon as we got asked we were buzzing for the three or four months to the gig. He was class and a top guy and just watching him do what he does was just crazy”.

The Azurescens are now taking their shows to Glasgow and Edinburgh, their upcoming show supporting The Utopiates in the Mash House on October 13

Review

The Island aims to resonate with listeners, discussing themes of change and how you must take responsibility to make changes happen. It also encapsulates the feeling of frustration about being trapped in one place and trying to run from that feeling.

Blessed immediately with luxurious guitar strums, this tune instantly draws your attention and takes your focus with a fresh sound. The vocals ignite a retro-feel as the quartet take you on a journey in search of change.

The lyrics, “will I ever make it off of this island”, and “nobody’s gonna come and rescue me” portray the theme of the song in a fun, metaphorical way.

Using new wave ambience and early 90’s nostalgia, The Island is a memorable tune that you will be singing for weeks.
