Single Review | Peony | Low Low Low

Alternative Edinburgh and Newcastle-based duo Peony recently released their debut single ‘Low Low Low’ and it was the perfect soundtrack for us to see out last year. We look back on 2023 with ‘Low Low Low’ still echoing in our head.

“‘Low Low Low’ explores the process of escaping from the identity we are given by our family and early environment. It charts a person’s struggle to nurture and develop their true self.”

The single is the first track the duo wrote together and it is a softly thumping alternative rock track easily leaving a strong impression on those listening for the first time, and those listening for the umpteenth time. The single’s final version got recorded at Newcastle’s Blank Studios and sounds like a slick version of an early Foo Fighters track with a lot more distortion and uniqueness blended in.

‘Low Low Low’ is a dark and rambling rock track with a driving drumbeat which sounds like a heartbeat of someone who’s on their fifth coffee of the day, or in my case, my first… There’s a sound similar to goth rock bands currently kicking about, such as IST IST and classic rock band Nada Surf. The different inspirations and influences that have made it to the final product of Peony’s debut promise a lot for what’s to come of the duo.

Peony are made up of vocalist and guitarist William Rees, and percussionist Ryan Gray, they grew up and became friends and formed Peony in late 2022. William promotes the power of creative expression through his background in child psychotherapy, Ryan studied for a degree in psychology before conducting his own research on the effect musical experiences have on the brain functions that govern our thoughts. Together they hope that by sharing their vulnerability and sincerity they can help others feel more supported.
