SINGLE REVIEW | LUNA THE PROFESSOR | SING FOR YOUR SUPPER

2019 was a year of many highlights for Wishaw indie-quartet Luna The Professor. They kick-started with a sold-out performance at King Tuts New Year’s Revolution and ended the year with a packed Barras Art & Design Centre headline show. In between, they had memorable performances at Tenement Trail and the Main Stage at Belladrum just to name just a couple. As expected, when December came along and the critics started to publish their lists of One’s to Watch in 2020, Luna The Professor, quite rightly, staked their claim alongside some of Scotland’s best artists in an ever-flourishing music scene.

Growing up in a post-industrial Steeltown, in the shadows of the old Ravenscraig sight, their first single of 2020 ‘Sing for your Supper’ perfectly encapsulates a fighting working-class spirit that is still ever present across Lanarkshire.

The lyric video for the track opens with a news bulletin detailing the mass unemployment that crippled the band’s hometown and surrounding areas following the closure of the steelworks in the early 90s and goes on to feature clips from around that time. The opening line “It’s you against you, oh nobody’s gonna hand it on a plate for you” not only resonates with those dark times but also the current climate and a music scene in which these young lads are working hard to make their mark.

Frontman Johnny Irwin is well accustomed with penning catchy sing-along choruses and Sing for your Supper is no different. There’s a sense of grit and determination shining through this song and it’s the same grit and determination that alongside Luna The Professors confidence and evident talent could result in them successfully ‘Singing for their Supper’ for years to come.
