A song for musical maximalists

Somebody‘ is the second single from Groove Down, a funk quintet based in the Scottish capital. Groove Down are a five-piece that create music that allows for exactly what their name states. 2023 saw the release of their debut single ‘Walk on By‘ and ‘Somebody‘ aims to follow in this track’s footsteps.

Groove Down are self-described as a “one-of-a-kind mix of talent“. Joining vocalist and lyricist Rue Cooper are guitarist Michael Falleman, Gregor Wilson on bass, Xabi Villares on percussion and Joan Blasco on keys. As a band, there is an accumulation of musical tastes and experiences that has resulted in the funk-pop driven music that they create. The band has been formed as a result of fusing together years of playing, jazz and gospel backgrounds as well as a life-long love for funk.

Building up to their debut EP, set for release later this year, ‘Somebody‘ gives listeners a taste of what to expect from the upcoming release. It includes elements from multiple eras of music, incorporating genre-combining similarities to music from the 90s, pushing a palette of mixed styles. This is a track that further incorporates the upbeat melodies of Diana Ross, funk-driven songs from Jean Knight, a rock/bass edge like that of Daryl Hall & John Oates and the catchiness of Madonna. If you like any, or a combination, of those previously listed, then you’ll love ‘Somebody‘ and the sound Groove Down are aiming for.

It’s quite obvious that funk is being made popular again. With fellow Scottish bands like High Fade taking their interpretation of funk and fusing it with elements of rock, it has opened up the possibility for more vast audiences, acknowledgment and appreciation. Bikini Body have also done something similar. Their recent single ‘Mr Tinnitus‘ combines major bass and funk elements along with the catchiness that Groove Down have also incorporated.

As a song for musical maximalists, ‘Somebody‘ takes inspiration primarily from 70s funk and disco as well as the bright high-energy pop from the 80s. This has created an anthemic amalgamation of aspects that allows for a wider audience to appreciate. It is becoming evident that Groove Down know where they want to take their music, and are bringing listeners along for the journey.
