Green‘ is the most recent release from Edinburgh four-piece Figurines. This latest track is the band’s long-awaited musical return, with their last studio release being 2022 single ‘So I’m Told‘. Even though this is the quartet’s only release of 2023, it sets them up nicely for a brand new year of music.

This newest addition to their discography expertly fuses together the concepts of a ballad and an indie-rock anthem. With various influences and genres present in this tune, Figurines give an insight into their musical preferences and the impact these have on their own music. There is an alternative sound to ‘Green‘ which resembles that of groups like Radiohead and Nirvana.

As well as an alternative rock sound, this newest track also has a somewhat soothing and calming feel to it, differing from their 2022 single which is bass heavy and dance infused. This switch in sounds is creatively done. It leaves Figurines in a great space to either keep making songs similar to this, or even continue to branch into different genres or styles.

Along with the calmer and steady mood, the chorus specifically is made to sound a little bit like a mantra. This consistent tempo is provided by bassist Tal Liston-Smith as well as drummer James Douglas who continue the balanced sound through steady playing. In a live setting, this can be heard even more as they accompany frontman Josh Vaughan’s vocals. The emotion and meaning behind this track is also pushed further by a striking solo from guitarist Ben Vaughan.

Vaughan’s voice in ‘Green‘ is easy to identify and also very easy to follow. He sings on top of this safe sound and illustrates the reassuring mantra effect of the song. This effect is widely down to the versatile wording throughout. While the chorus in particular holds much of the overall impact, the verses also contain some lovely lyricism. The opening line is “variety is the spice of life, but more than a little bit can leave you frightened“. All of our lives are constantly changing and this change can be invigorating. However, as Figurines identify, too much change can be overwhelming, or in their words, “frightening“. This relatable and honest approach continues into the chorus:

“When lighting strikes you in your face, and burns your eyes to a world of grey. Eventually I know you’ll see, a world of green for you and me”.

The simplicity in this chorus makes it incredibly memorable and difficult to get out of your head. It’s comforting message reassures listeners that no matter your circumstances or situation, there are lighter times ahead. The “lightning” could be pretty much anything and the impact these different things and experiences have on us differ drastically. It is amazing how uncomplicated and beautifully worded this message is. The final line of the chorus is also repeated as the song fades out, increasing the intended impact on listeners.

Figurines have accomplished the skill of creating a wonderfully worded track that makes for very intriguing listening. It is a track you could easily have on repeat and not get bored of. Figurines are definitely a band to watch, it will be exciting to see what they do next.
