Single Review | Attic Days | Trying To Please

Trying To Please single artwork

An enticing and inviting sound, creates a sense of familiarity.

Edinburgh five-piece Attic Days continue their addictive sound with third single ‘Trying To Please‘. The group’s newest track brings a much needed feeling of brightness and happiness. While their songs feature around the common concept of love and feelings associated with it, Attic Days’ approach to this topic is a unique one. Their lyrics are wonderfully written and sang in a beautifully melodic way. Their catchy choruses are incredibly easy to follow and you’ll find yourself singing along very quickly.

Attic Days have an engaging and wonderful way of phrasing their words. They take writing about love to a different level with Kirstie Maclean’s stunningly clear vocals, and harmonising that sounds effortless, voicing the delicate and intricate wording. This is a song that sounds as though it is being sung directly to someone. Lyrics like “now you’ve got me, placed in the palm of your hand” propose a sense of trust in a certain person mixed with a level of vulnerability. This phrase also reflects the cover artwork for this single, giving a piece of imagery to connect to the lyric. They also feature the lyrics “you forget that I’ve been chasing foolishness“. This is a very gentle reflection on past situations and relationships that weren’t perhaps what was sought after.

The melody of this tune is created by the repeated riffs from guitarist Ruariadh Rattray who is joined by Murray Brown on bass, and Alfie Smith on drums. They accompany Maclean and her crystal clear vocals. Together, they create a foot-tapping track that will have everyone moving and dancing. Later on, around the 3 minute point, Rory Bayne follows a chorus that is slowed down at the end. Bayne comes in with a powerful guitar solo that changes the tempo to a slower one. However, this only adds to the emotion and feel of the track to one that invokes a feeling of passion. After this solo, the song plays out with a chorus of vocalisations that ends the song on a calmer note than when it began.

There is so much to take in with this song that it is hard not to press repeat and hear the addictive sound again. ‘Trying To Please‘ continues to prove Attic Days’ individual talents and their innate songwriting abilities. With such an enticing and inviting sound, the band create a sense of familiarity with their music. This allows a wider audience to resonate with their songs even if they haven’t experienced exactly what the track details.

It will be exciting to hear what Attic Days will release next, they are local talents to watch.
