Glasgow-based singer-songwriter, Drew Davies, and producer, Tom Livingston, have partnered together on a new electronic jazz-punk project under the name Funk Cabal. Their debut album, Open Up, will release later this month.
The pair announced that their first album will drop on April 18, produced under Glasgow-based label, Tremors. Open Up showcases “a blend of jazz-funk, house, electro, and art rock” according to Livingston.
In a teaser mash-up of unnamed track previews, the heart of Open Up shines through. While the tracks have similar overarching vibes, nuances within them provide a refreshed listening experience. Open Up doesn’t jerk you around with multiple styles crammed into one album, instead subtle differences journey you through space and time.
The first preview airs out the stage with ghostly, smooth, 80s-sounding instrumentals. The breezy blast-to-the-past sets the tone for the rest of the album.
Davies’ vintage-like vocals shine in the second preview before we melt into another track where sound effects take the spotlight. This dreamy, retro yet futuristic style features twinkling instrumentals reminiscent of stargazing on a summer night. The instrumental weaves in and out of focus with Davies’ vocals, escaping your grasp as they bounce off one another.
Ending the previews is an instrumental piece which oozes the very essence of Open Up. Tangy sax, low moaning beats, and jazzy undertones combine to create a track which many 2000s kids may relate to a chill, retro game soundtrack.
Davies and Livingston did allow one full song to see daylight ahead of the official album release – I think I’ve lost my way. A glittering synth sparkles throughout this track, backed with a pumping electronic bass and gentle, thoughtful vocals. It’s easy to picture this playing in a club as the music guides you on a floating journey. Imagine coasting the waves generated by the synth with the beat bubbling up around you as vocals keep you afloat – that is what I think I’ve lost my way sounds like, despite being titled as feelings of uncertainty and confusion.
