SINGLE REVIEW | THE ROOKS | RIGHT ABOUT NOW

Glaswegian rising stars The Rooks take on a gritter rock sound with their new track ‘Right About Now’.

As well as releasing their brand new single the indie rockers have announced that they will be playing this years TRNSMT Festival. They will be the only band on the lineup without a manager, agent or label, they have impressively earned this coveted spot all on their own.

With a mutual love for bands like The Strokes and Kings of Leon, the Glasgow group came together while they were in school, jamming together in the school’s music cupboard. The five-piece have continued to play together in unconventional locations to this day, under the guise of a pseudonym appearing at places like a bowling alley or town halls. This is a band that know how to entice listeners, and their music then makes people want to stay. Last years singles, ‘Lay Me Down’ and ‘Renegade’ have amassed over 50k streams combined on Spotify alone. The group have also made their name playing support slots for the likes of Blossoms and Dylan John Thomas, as well as playing a headline show at Glasgow’s infamous King Tuts Wah Wah Hut, which sold out in a matter of days!

The groups new single ‘Right About Now’ is a raw, self-reflective take that sees them lean into a grittier indie rock direction.

On the single frontman Ross Gardiner explains, “We wanted to try a different process in the studio this time, we’d been playing Right About Now live for a couple of months and we were comfortable with the arrangement, so we tracked most of it live.

Guitarist Matthew McFadyen confesses, “The lyrics took some time, we’d been playing it through for a couple of weeks. I didn’t have much direction for the song lyrically at the time. I’d woken up somewhere I maybe shouldn’t have and wrote most of them down on an empty train carriage back home. There’s definitely more self-reflection here, but I’ve got a lot to learn yet.

‘Right About Now’ is a song that gives a strong sense of old school indie rock, but it’s got a huge dose of modern gritty rock infused throughout. Being the first song I have ever heard from The Rooks I could understand immediately why these guys are gaining the attention they are, there’s something so addictive about the way this one flows. The hook of the title lyric “right about now” leads the chorus that is likely to get stuck in your head and the single overall somehow manages to feel controlled but also like it could explode at any minute.

You can catch The Rooks live at Newcastle’s, The Cluny 2 on the 25th of June, or at TRNSMT Festival in July.
