Following along from their fabulous 2023 debut EP ‘Everything There Is’, Edinburgh’s own Day Sleeper have just dropped their latest single ‘Speed of Tragedy’ and it can only be described as utterly delightful. With its rich textures and addictive layers, the Leithers have firmly cemented themselves as ones to keep an eye on throughout 2026.
Starting the song off on the right foot are the drums. Punchy and energetic, you just can’t help but be mesmerised by the sheer skill and talent that’s on display. Then the piano comes rushing in, injecting a dazzling rush of warmth into the heart of the song which continues on throughout ‘Speed of Tragedy’s entire four and a bit minute runtime.
The track has everything but the kitchen sink in the mix. There’s something new to discover upon every listen like the deep hum of the saxophone or the lush guitar tones which help to make, what might be, the greatest release of February 2026.
‘Speed of Tragedy’ reminds me slightly of something that Sam Fender would release. Not only because of the twinkling pianos but also because of Leo Bargery’s soulful vocals which lend the song its rich and infatuating decadence.
With a sound similar to that of Scottish legends including Twilight Sad and Mogwai, it’s no wonder that Day Sleeper are beginning to get recognised for what they’ve created and if this track is anything to go by, I have no doubt that this recognition will only grow.
