SINGLE REVIEW| SOMETHING STRANGE| SUNSTINGER

A short, edgy fluttering from the electric guitar braces you before drums, base, and guitar knock your breath away in Sunstinger’s latest single, Something Strange.

The underground Scottish alternative band, Sunstinger, burst into the music scene with hits such as Shadows, Aro, and Feel the Sun. Just last year, the group released their first EP Worthless, and they’ve kept up the momentum with their latest track.

Something Strange vocalises the feeling of losing who you are and the emotional and psychological unrest that follows. Matching the band’s image, this song paints a beautiful and unique musical landscape as it draws you in to life experiences and emotional states of thought.

This track balances anger and aggression with raw honesty and transparency. An unnerving bridge is met with the passionate shredding of strings before the vulnerable lyricism crawls back in.

Dipped in a thick coating of reverb, the guitar steals the show in Something Strange as it punches straight into your heart and soul, with the drums following closely behind. Certain parts of Something Strange are reminiscent of Deftones’ Sextape.

The lyrics, “I can’t explain the shift and change, lost within the something strange,” join the instruments in a perfect harmony. The track encapsulates the loud, buzzing feeling of uncertainty alongside calmer, more thoughtful spaces during the four-minute run time.

Fans of Slowdive and the shoegaze genre will resonate with Sunstinger’s work – you can find them on Spotify and Soundcloud. The group, who originated from Dunfermline, are also ramping up for some live performances. Catch them at Donne the Rabbit Hole Festival on August 3 or at Gazefest in Belfast on August 30, with more shows to be announced.
