SINGLE REVIEW | SILVER DOLLAR ROOM | MONSTERS

Scottish alt-rockers Silver Dollar Room have released their new single, Monsters, a blistering track which delves into some harrowing subject matter.

The song was inspired by the BBC documentary Three Girls which focused on the Rochdale child abuse scandal, the lyrical content of the song reflects on the neglect shown by society and institutions surrounding the matter.

It begins with a riff reminiscent of some early Biffy Clyro, before the vocals come in. The tone on the vocals fits the song like a glove, the delivery really sells the subject matter behind the song too, as it is a perfect mix of remorseful, powerful and angry. One member of the band described it as their “angriest” song and you can really feel the emotion of it live.

The lyrics tell the story of a 14-year-old girl named Holly being lured in and abused by older men. The lyrics describe the men as monsters before discussing the failings of the police, You called the police, they say it’s all just lies.

The song expertly builds and swells to an explosion of emotion in the chorus, there is only one line in the chorus, but that is all that is needed. The screaming of Now you’re lost paired with the immense instrumentation offered up by the rest of the band perfectly encapsulates the emotional energy that is flowing through this song.

After the second chorus the instrumental gets significantly heavier, the song becomes more sinister and it really draws you in, before thrashing into one final chorus that is bursting with emotion.

The single is the latest taste of the band’s upcoming sophomore album, It Can’t Rain All The Time, with release set for September 12th. With shows across Scotland including an album release show in Edinburgh coming up, Silver Dollar Room are certainly a band to keep an eye on in the near future.
