SINGLE REVIEW | FLAIR | NAUSEA

Glasgow born band, Flair, are back with another single Nausea which is set to exceed the already high expectations the band have created among their listeners. After forming in 2019, the band haven’t stopped as they’ve found their sound and create electrifying music that highlights that they know exactly what they want to do and the effect it should have. Nausea contrasts the rest of their discography, showcasing their versatility as they delve into the darker aspect of their music and embody it in the song that feels almost haunting to listen to.

We’re instantly pulled into the song with the punchy drums and the strong bassline, accompanied by this inaudible talking that’s filtered like we’re listening to the radio. We’re further pulled into this dark, haunting world Flair is creating once the vocals accompanied by the guitar are brought in. It’s powerful and you want to keep listening as the compelling lyrics of ‘Help, I think I’m lost inside my head/God, it must be perfect in your world yeah’ begin.

The song builds up till about half way through; physically representing the inner turmoil that the lyrics are describing. The vocals and instrumentals become significantly louder, all coming together to create the climax of the song. It feels like a breaking point, all the inner pressure and distress that is captured within the lyrics takes us to this moment, the beginning feels like the suppression that everybody forces when they’re having a tough time, not wanting to outwardly show but once we hear ‘I think I’m better off dead’ repeated multiple times, it encapsulates the universal experience of everything coming out and being revealed when you physically can’t take anymore. Flair have beautifully communicated that feeling that everybody knows as they bring together the instrumentals, vocals and lyrics that allow most people to relate to this song and find themselves unable to stop listening.

The end of the song contrasts the beginning, it was quiet and haunting and it ends loud and powerful. It feels like, as listeners, we’ve been on a journey and experienced the emotions with the band. The instrumentals and vocals complement one another, never trying to outdo the other. The emotion in the song is compelling, it’s crafted together amazingly. The song has already amassed over 40,000 streams on Spotify after only being released for around two weeks, this band is going places and I’m excited to see where their talent takes them.
