SINGLE REVIEW | CLAY RINGS | AT NATHAN’S HOUSE

Clay Rings are a Spanish–Brit indie band from Glasgow who mix hedonism with wistful melancholy in their newest track “At Nathan’s House” the lead single from their newly announced EP Day After Day.

This sparkly single captures the fizzy, dizzy haze of a house party in full swing. The lyrics feel both in-the-moment and reflective, tracing youthful excitement, awkward missteps and the nerve-wracking thrill of approaching a crush. The intro immediately welcomes you to the party, layering laughter and chatter over heavy, rocking guitars.

It’s refreshing to hear the relatable shyness in bassist and lead singer Freddie Duck’s vocals as the first few verses act as an internal pep talk. The story is enriched by vocals from Eve Scrimger, who adds to the dialogue with her rich, soulful tone. Lyrical storytelling has always been a strength in Clay’s Rings’ writing from “Blue Boy Dreams” to “Limelight” but this new track is particularly exciting as we hear two voices speaking to and about each other through the song.

Towards the end, guitarist Oli Ausin joins in on vocals, pushing the track toward a messy, heady, crescendo of house-party chaos. “All I want to know, where did you go?” echoes in varied tones and overlapping voices, yet the listener remains optimistic that the two lovers will find each other. The strong guitar melody, energetic drums and harmonious vocals make “At Nathan’s House” the funkiest, grooviest art-pop bop around.

If the single is anything to go by, I can’t wait to hear the rest of upcoming EP Day After Day.

“At Nathan’s House” out on streaming platforms now.
