As part of his UK tour, jazz artist and bandleader Sam Newbould will be playing Edinburgh, Stirling, Greenock and Glasgow this April. After his second album “Bogus Notus” was lauded by critics, Sam is all set to debut his latest one on this tour, the perfect way to kick off spring.
Sam Newbould approaches jazz, and performance as a whole with the incentive of telling a story, spreading a message. This is exactly what this tour is about, being a celebration of his latest album titled “Homing” which is based on his encounter with a Polish homing pigeon, a metaphor for the artist building a home and life abroad. He emphasises “Unlike the homing pigeon, my feeling of home isn’t tied to a place anymore. Instead, it’s about relationships, experiences, and moments. That’s what this album—and this tour—is all about.”
Sam’s distinctive, genre-blending style coupled with his ensemble of talented backing makes any of his shows a can’t miss. His experience with the saxophone, composition and also with teaching give him a unique angle to create music from and he has been described by NRC (NL) as “a pearl in the jazz catch of the day”.
Despite being based in Amsterdam, Sam Newbould refers to this tour as his personal homecoming. He was born in Yorkshire, and makes two stops at Bradford and Kendal before heading down to Scotland, where he will be taking the stage at Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh, The Tolbooth in Stirling, Beacon Arts Centre in Greenock and finally Jazz at the Merchant’s House in Glasgow along with his five piece ensemble featuring Bernard van Rossum (tenor sax), Xavi Torres (piano), Jort Terwijn (bass), and Guy Salamon (drums).
A chance to see this much talent on one stage, under one roof does not often come by, and if you’re lucky enough to get a ticket, you will have seen some of Europe’s finest musicians up close in some of the most celebrated venues across Scotland.
