FESTIVAL REVIEW | BBC RADIO 1 BIG WEEKEND @ DUNDEE | SATURDAY

The annual honour of hosting BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend was bestowed upon Dundee last weekend, a blessing for Scottish music fans and the artists who love playing for our iconic crowds.

Saturday’s mainstage headliners included the Jonas Brothers, Jess Glynne, and The 1975.

Joel Corry and Tom Grennan also played, with the DJ joining Grennan on stage for a portion of his set.

Both acts engaged phenomenally with the mass crowd. In their respective sets, Grennan was encouraging crouching before the drop and Corry was getting the hands in the air.

Jess Glynne, Pale Waves and Jonas Brothers were some other stand outs of the day. All three had a great stage presence, played the crowd favourites, and contributed to the great atmosphere in Camperdown Park.

The 1975 however, as always, met and exceeded the crowd’s high expectations.

The setlist had tracks from their newest album, Being Funny in a Foreign Language (BFIAFL) with the stage mirroring the set used in the albums tour. The BFIAFL tour has already came to Scotland, with The 1975 playing a sold out gig at Glasgow’s OVO Hydro in January.

However, the Dundee show was different enough that it was still an excellent time, although once consistency was frontman Matty Healy again proclaiming his support for Scottish Independence.

A different and shorter set list made the night in Dundee feel like a whirlwind. Playing hits like Robbers, Give Yourself a Try, and About You, the audience loved it from start to finish.

BBC Radio 1 Weekend in Dundee was a blast on Saturday. The rest of the weekend seemed to run largely smoothly, making the festival reach its usual level of success.
