Home by Abby Lou finds its home (pun intended) perfectly within the genre it takes inspiration from. It clearly nods to Phoebe Bridgers’ early acoustic work, and Orla Gartland’s music, in a way that does not feel parrotted at all, but like a homage to these incredibly successful musicians.
Musically, the song remains slightly melancholic throughout, with a plaintive acoustic guitar taking centre stage in the melody. The lyrics start full of nostalgia and tenderness for a newborn love that feels slightly uncertain, but as we move towards the end it is clear that Abby Lou wants to stay hopeful: “Cuz now a month’s gone by, I feel so lucky to be alive.”
This single is a strong start for an emerging artist, but it does carry a naiveness to its lyrics that make it clear that the road ahead of Abby Lou as a songwriter is still long.
It is hard to judge an artist’s full potential from a single song. While we can give a quick rundown of the initial work, it becomes difficult to place this single within the tapestry of a full body of work. Hopefully, this means we will soon be able to hear more from this endearing new artist.
It is clear that Abby Lou fits just right within a very popular genre nowadays. Her work can be read within the larger context of a rich musical landscape that has produced some of the most affirmed artists of this decade. This might as well foretell further success for her.
