Back in Glasgow on 9th May with a musical comedy show, Tenacious D fans were in for the usual treat of a hilarious and talented performance from Kyle Gass and the world-famous Jack Black.
The comedy-rock duo had booked comedian Dave Hill as their opener, who amused the crowd with some short Glasgow, Poundland and metal-music based bits as well as whipping out the guitar to entertain with some (brief) songs.
Before long, however, Tenacious D took to the stage in a firey blitz of passion, rock and power, welcomed by roaring cheers and continuous fan chants of “D,D,D”. Quickly they started with Kickapoo, the song that opens Pick of Destiny, the fictional Tenacious D film. Naturally, the crowd went wild and screamed the lyrics at an extraordinary volume.

From there the crowd never quietened and the energy from Tenacious D never withered. However, a second wave of enthusiasm struck the Hydro when Tenacious D performed their biggest hit quite quickly into the set. Tribute began and, personally, I’ve never heard a Hydro crowd so consistently loud. The entire song- even the monologue- was hollered by all. It was a moment to behold.
Other favourites like The Metal, Roadie, and their cover of Wicked Game were performed amidst comedy bits. A poor technician (named Biffy Pyro, after the Scottish band attending the show that night) was routinely ridiculed for missing his pyro queues. Tenacious D bickered amongst themselves and The Metal came out during The Metal for a rock-off, too. The evening was equal parts concert and show, providing something for everyone.

Soon after, the D played Beelzebub where the guitarist took on the role of the Devil. This caused the crowd to once again lose their minds, screaming all the words of all the characters and banging their heads to every beat.
Before the night concluded, an encore was performed which allowed the night to finish on another fan favourite. F*ck Her Gently had friends, family, and couples singing faithfully amidst laughing at the comedic lyrics. Laughter and music were how the night ended – similar to how it had been for the rest of the show. It was a fantastic finish to a flawless night.
