SINGLE REVIEW | THE BIG DAY | BORN KILLER

Coming for you with their 80’s approved style and punchy synth pop sound are The Big Day. In less than a year, The Big Day have experienced huge success with their debut single Fashion Statement and follow up Bad Things. Reaching the March final of BBC Scotland’s Introducing Act of the Year, the four piece were also selected as one of just four showcasing artists at this years Wide Day conference. They even made their TRNSMT debut opening Saturday’s The River Stage to a full crowd. Their third single Born Killer released earlier this month does not let down the momentum built and is an instant crowd charmer.

The Big Day dont do anything by half. Lyrically the song explores split personality and the consequences it delivers. Born Killer acknowledges the bad choices we make, the guilt and regret that ultimately follows but the acceptance that the buzz is worth it. A song about addiction and fear of being caught but feeling good anyway. Using murder as the theatrical example, it’s a much more relatable theme than first perceived.

Born Killer gets straight to the melodic hook fans have come to expect in its opening. The vocal harmonies from this band are a pop dream. Their use of synth and effect capture that theatrical momentum so well. The chord progression builds such anticipation to compliment it’s devious themes. This song is a real credit to the writers potential, there’s so much going on here that in terms of musicianship it’s no surprise this band are taking off at the pace they are.

BORN KILLER – THE BIG DAY

We feel like it’s a huge and very exciting step forward for the band in terms of direction and style, leaning further into our love of stadium anthems but still keeping our weirder elements firmly intact. Writing ‘Born Killer’ has given us that confidence to explore new sounds and throw contrasting influences together into something we feel proud of, which honestly means the absolute world to us.’

The Big Day on Born Killer

Full of charisma and melodic charm, Born Killer feels like a natural progression from the earlier singles. Retaining the heavy 80’s pop inspiration but capturing a more accessible modern flare really takes them to the next level. Think The Killers with a Devo-esque quirkiness and you only begin to scratch the kooky surface.

As The Big Day begin to move into the studio to record their debut EP you can catch the guys on tour with the incredible Fatherson this autumn.
