I was excited to get the chance to review the latest track from one of the leading figures of the Edinburgh drum and bass scene, producer Refracta, featuring fast-rising emerging artist Charlotte X on vocals. The artwork for ‘Atmosphere’ reminds me of an event horizon with a laser-like light beam, and I couldn’t wait to get pulled in.
Opening with pure resonant, and fuzzy bass, the atmosphere of the track itself is reminiscent of liquid DnB, but you’re hit with metallic liquid instead. It brings to mind the element mercury: smooth but weighted with intensity. The classic 707-sounding claps provide a nostalgic feel, and Charlotte’s wistful vocals add colour and dimension. The captivating lyrics flow smoothly throughout.
Layered pads set the tone and the track drives forward with drums; the hi-hats and snare are clean and crisp. The razor-sharp bass at the forefront mixes well with the dreamy vocals, creating a tune that fits perfectly with the recent heat surge we’ve been getting in Scotland. The lyrical message of ‘Atmosphere’ is one of longing for good times to stay, much like hoping the heatwave will linger. It’s that feeling that makes this track the perfect tune for summer.
