Glasgow-based Lewis Wilson adds to his already impressive discography with his latest release, ‘Forty Miles Left’. Nestling itself nicely amongst other singles, including ‘Heartbreak Away’ and ‘Waiting For Your Love’, the song might just be my favourite release of all time from the singer/songwriter.
You know when artists on social media say that they’ve written the “song of the Summer” to build hype around their new release? Well, Wilson actually has here. With its jangly guitars that make up the fundamental basis of the track, it’s a song built to be blasted on speakers during those hot months. ‘Forty Miles Left’ is everything you need in a Summer anthem; fun with a tinge of heartache, fresh and most importantly, exciting. Rather than blending into the background and getting lost in the noise of all the other music that’s constantly being produced and released, he’s made something that’s built to last and that’s impressive for any musician, never mind someone who’s so young.
The use of dynamics here is very clever, ensuring that you’ll want to keep returning to the track again and again. For the most part, it’s quite loud and in your face but there are a few moments where the Glaswegian’s powerful vocals carry the song with just the guitars supporting.
With standout lyrics including “I feel like I’m making a mistake / well, you’re a pretty boy in this lonely world / it’s too late, too late to go back”, they all make for a listen that encompasses the emotional turmoil that life brings about, letting people who are in the same boat feel less alone.
Having already secured support slots for bands including Miss Madison and Tez, with another one lined up for the 22nd of May at Rocco’s Music Lounge, I would implore you to keep an eye on this rising star because let me tell you, he’s not going to be playing venues like Rocco’s and Sneaky Pete’s for much longer!
