Glasgow-based quartet heavyskint released their third single He Says, She Says last week, and it’s certainly their strongest work to date.
The up-and-coming group have quickly earned a reputation as one of Glasgow’s most exciting live bands, but with this new single, they’re proving that their studio output is just as captivating. He Says, She Says combines the intensity and energy that makes them shine on stage, as well as their previous releases, When Are You Coming For Me Jesus? and Vice.
If there’s one thing that makes heavyskint stand out, it’s the moody and mysterious aura that they are able to create with their music. From the beginning of the track, a tension is created that isn’t quite let go throughout the song. The track begins with a ringing guitar line with steady drumming before Jacob Hunter’s mellow vocals come into the front of the mix.
The production on this track deserves praise. Every instrument is given room to breathe, which gives the song a natural momentum to build and become stronger as it goes on. The pre-chorus introduces a subtle groove with the short drum fills followed by a guitar slide, creating a ripple-like effect that bridges an explosive chorus.
When the chorus kicks in, the arrangement suddenly feels larger, with the band locking together to create a fullness in the track. Hunter delivers a compelling vocal performance with elongated notes accompanied by a restrained scream buried in the background of the mix. It’s a touch that provides an emotional and sonic depth to the track.
A peak is reached in the bridge, where everything from intensity, vocals and instrumentation are turned up another notch. A soaring guitar solo takes centre stage which gives the song more room and the band a moment to showcase their musicianship.
He Says, She Says is a cohesive track which truly sounds like a band who have found their identity. Listening to the track on repeat only makes me excited to see what they do next. Heavyskint are not afraid to push the limits, and this is why they have already made their mark in the Glasgow music scene.
