SINGLE REVIEW | EVACUATE | THE CASTROS

Returning from a busy season of festivals and gigs, Scottish indie alt-rock five-piece, The Castros, have recently released a new single. Evacuate, released 29 November, is a thought-provoking track that showcases hidden aspects of the music industry.

Evacuate talks about the downsides of the industry – such as creative output being overruled by capitalisation of gains, how streaming music and social media can compromise the soul of music.

It’s an important track to show that while the band loves their fans and feels the thrill of performing live, the music industry isn’t all sunshine and rainbows.

Opening with a distorted radio message, Evacuate brings a dystopian twist to the band’s sound before jumping into their pounding signature style.

“Don’t you dare evacuate,” is the repeating message from this track as the band tells fans to stick with them and see what they do next. It’s no leap to say that The Castros will soon become a well-known name across the indie rock scene – it’s only a matter of time before they shoot to stardom.

Evacuate is upbeat with hints of anger at the industry seeping through. “Android Revolution, the robots they’ll be next. They’ll write our songs, they’ll smoke our bongs, and even send our texts”, Brad Stalker, lead singer, belts out behind a thrumming base (Kyle McIntyre, John Gowans, and Aiden Creaney) and steady drums (Sean Hume).

Evacuate is out now on Panhead Sharps’ Spotify. If you want to catch the band’s energetic stage presence, they are performing live at PJ Molloys, Dunfermline on 6 December with more dates to follow.

The group aren’t showing any signs of slowing down as they prepare to barrel in to the New Year with more track and more gigs. To keep track of what they’re up to, you can find their Instagram here.
