GIG REVIEW | WET LEG @ USHER HALL, EDINBURGH

It has been a wee since I have been to a live gig to review and when I had the opportunity to go along to the Usher Hall to see Wet Leg I couldn’t say no. Also, this was the first time I had been to the Usher Hall and what a beautiful building which soon was rocking from the noise of the gig.

The main, and only, support of the night came from Katy J Pearson. She commented that she knew one of the members of Wet Leg since they were young touring on the local Bristol gig scene so to see Katy supporting them on a big stage in Edinburgh is a great tip to any artists out there to keep going and who knows where you will end up playing. I really had no idea about Katy pre gig but after this performance I will absolutely be looking out for the next time she plays in Scotland. The 30 min support slot flew by, which I always think is a great indication of a good performance. Katy’s sound reminds me very much of Stevie Nicks and her performance really captured the packed audience who were in early to see her.

Sitting in the Upper Circle of the Usher Hall, I had the perfect vantage point to patiently wait on the main event starting. Just after 9pm and through a fog of dry ice the band emerged much to the delight of the sold out crowd. This is the first time I had seen the band playing an indoor venue, having seem them play outdoors at festivals such at TRNSMT. The band kicked off their set with the first release from their upcoming new album. “catch these fists” has been getting plenty of airtime on national radio stations such as Radio X and it was great to hear this live.

Playing through a mixture of old and new songs, there was something for everyone in this set. Totalling 16 songs, every song was well received and had the grand, old building rocking. With little chatter in between songs, the band were just content with playing which is refreshing to see as sometimes momentum in a set is lost with too much chatter. Second to last on the set they played fan favourite “Chaise Longue” which turned the energy in the crowd up a few levels.

Rounding off the night was new single “CPR” which I believe will go on to be a new fan favourite and was well received despite the gig date being the date of it being released. As the gig came to a close, there was no encore and the audience left the Usher Hall after a brilliant gig wanting more.
