GIG REVIEW | NIGHT CALLER | THE FLYING DUCK 31.08.24

On 31st of August, we bounced on down to The Flying Duck in Glasgow to witness Night Caller’s EP launch party “So Much Pink’. This EP is an unskippable collection of songs (not that I’ve tried to), that was released at the end of July.

The night started out with support from four-piece band Fuzzy. They warmed the crowd up with everything from punchy tunes to songs of tranquillity. One song I couldn’t help myself sway to was ‘Spectacular’. One thing I enjoyed about this band is that each song that was played was sang by different members. It is clear that the band is just bursting with content waiting to record and release. I will be keeping an eye on this group for sure.

After Fuzzy warmed up our cochleae, Night Caller took to the stage and brandish their new EP to the lucky audience. To introduce them on stage they had Steven Thomas, a writer and spoken word artist from Glasgow, and the crowd welcomed them into the spotlight.

Now that Night Caller were on the stage, the merry band of five started their night of music off with ‘Toybox’, which is a song about sex toys under a bed. The high energetic group transferred their spirit to their fans and had the crowd swaying and dancing from the very first song. In between songs the frontman talked to the crowd and gave them a bit of patter. For example, before every song, he would introduce the song as “this next one, is all about looove” for every song they played. Another bit between songs that made me laugh was the frontman said “have we got anyone from… nah”, making me think that whatever pops into the magical creative dome of his he says.

The guitarists played a vital part in this night with their vigorous strumming on tracks such as ‘Begging for a Heart to Break’ and ‘Number One Wee Guy’. The drummer battering away and the bassist following tightly with him. Before they started a certain tune. The frontman, Danny, had a bag of something in his hand. I soon came to realise that this was a bag of communion bread, y’know the ones, the little wafer circles that get dished out in chapels. Before we knew it, people were queueing up for a slice and I certainly joined in fear of FOMO.

In the middle of the set, they would perform three unreleased tracks, and I won’t say too much, but my god I hope they release them because you are in for a treat. One of the tracks being the song to come after the holy bread. The three tracks are high energy and of course, all about looove. I spoke with their guitarist, another Danny, to make sure I heard the song titles correct. I won’t tell what the song names are, you will just need to take a trip to see them live to know that.

Night Caller played a couple songs from their debut EP ‘Bedroom Thoughts’ with tracks ‘Get Right To It’ and ‘The Look Your Sister Gives Me’. They are both quite slow songs so it gave us a chance to recharge our energy before bursting into ‘Baby’s on the Border’ and ‘Number One Wee Guy’.

‘Baby’s on the Border’ had a bit of a change to it as there was no saxophonist present. I do love that instrument in the song so I was eager to see how they would do without, but they sure made it work. The night ended with ‘Number One Wee Guy’, this one being my favourite song from them and probably will be in my top songs on Spotify Wrapped this year. If Night Caller are in your area then do go see them, even if they’re not in your area, still do go see them.
