With only 3 UK anniversary shows of their ground-breaking, co-headline tour this year, we are fortunate enough to host one of their special dates in Glasgow at the Hydro. It’s none other than Death Cab for Cutie and The Postal Service. Many of us will have grown up dealing with our feelings through the lyrics and sounds of both of these bands, and the chance to see them live in Scotland is one not to be missed. Their most recent tour in 2023 ‘Give up Transatlanticism’ saw over a quarter of a million fans attend, proving the desire to experience them live is alive and well.
The tour celebrates the 20th anniversaries of each band’s game-changing 2003 albums, The Postal Service’s platinum RIAA certified ‘Give Up’ and Death Cab for Cutie’s platinum RIAA certified LP Transatlanticism. Both were releases that changed the shape of indie rock. Capturing the hearts and minds of many, spanning generations with a love of music like no other. To have released both in one year, Benjamin Gibbard has shown the expanse and level of innovation possible. Many have been inspired by the work of both bands, creating history as well as music.
“I know for a fact I will never have a year again like 2003. The Postal Service record came out, Transatlanticism came out. These two records will be on my tombstone, and I’m totally fine with that. I’ve never had a more creatively inspired year.” – Benjamin Gibbard
The Postal Service is comprised of Gibbard, Jimmy Tamborello, and Jenny Lewis; Death Cab for
Cutie is comprised of Gibbard, Nick Harmer, Dave Depper, Zac Rae, and Jason McGerr.
Formed in Bellingham, WA in 1997, Death Cab for Cutie became instantly iconic. With Ben Gibbard as the lead songwriter it was no surprise to see a masterpiece like Transatlanticism later named by NPR as one of “The Decade’s 50 Most Important Recordings.” It is an ageless piece of finely crafted songs. It was in 2003 than Gibbard joined with Jimmy Tamborello to form the The Postal Service. It was also in this year that the unforgettable studio LP ‘Give Up’ was created. Containing legendary tracks such as “The District Sleeps Alone Tonight” (a top 3 sensation on Billboard’s “Hot Dance Singles” chart) and the everlasting RIAA Gold-certified “Such Great Heights.”
The show in Glasgow is not to be missed. Don’t let this opportunity pass to experience some of the greatest artists of our time!
