GIG REVIEW| SUGABABES| @OVO HYDRO|

The Ovo Hydro was bouncing on Thursday, and rightly so! This arena was met with the iconic queens of the 2000s, The Sugababes. A range of older fans as well as the younger generation were in awe with the three celebrated woman of this girl band.

Whilst the crowd waited on this highly anticipated band, we were met with two supporting acts. The first act was a young artist called Luna. Her ambience was extraordinary. The crowd was met with an ethereal sensation as purple lights greeted our eyes whilst our ears were connected with her unique music. Luna created a welcoming atmosphere as she reminded the crowd that each of us were special and deserved unconditional love.

This was touching to hear as every crowd member gathered in the hydro was there to embrace on a journey of nostalgia. The next supporting act was another young female artist and her dj. Rose Gray set the mood with her pop music\techno vibes. Rose Gray created a club ambience as her beats pulsed through the crowd, setting the mood for a good night. Each of these supporting acts generated a confidence in the audience. They hyped the crowd with their affirmations of love as well as their rhythmic beats.

As we waited for the Sugababes to appear, the stage was covered with a sheet in a box shape. Suddenly the Sugababes appeared as the sheet dropped and we see the three icons holding microphones whilst sitting. As they serenaded the room, the original music video was played on a big screen in the background showing how young the artists were when they started. This was an impressive touch to the tour, it connected the audience with the artist, proving we all start somewhere.

It was clear this tour was all about nostalgia and the bands journey. As they spoke into the microphone connecting with the crowd they mentioned that this was their first time performing in Glasgow, and their first time performing in an arena. The Sugababes reflected on how important this tour was and how important each fan was to them. With that being said they then performed ‘Ugly’, a song surrounding the importance of knowing the beauty within. Whilst this was performed, the background screen was met with kind words of affirmation. I felt this was very sentimental considering the amount of young girls in the audience, reinforcing the message of self love.

This gig was centred around an early 2000s vibe, from the costumes to the stage decor, it was like stepping back in time. Each song performed was met with an original music video, or for one section of the concert there was footage of the girls rehearsing. Whilst this was shown they explained why this footage needed to be included, it corresponded with the sense of nostalgia as well as the principle of a self journey.

The girls then took a turn each with a prerecorded video documenting their background story. Each story ended with a heartfelt message to the fans. The concert felt a shift after a few passionate songs, the party was started. The second half was concluded of their most popular songs. They gifted us with performing ‘Push the button’ which inspired a party among the crowd. We also heard ‘Round Round’ and ‘About you now’. These songs are arguably what made the Sugababes so iconic, so to hear them live was mesmerising and exhilarating.

Overall this gig was amazing from start to finish. The supporting acts provided a thrilling experience. The crowd provided an unstoppable energy, and the Sugababes provided an electrifying performance. The concert was surprisingly emotional at times as we learned the importance of this tour for the girls. The background videos helped us connect with them on an emotional level which added to the nostalgia circling the event.
