Leith’s fun-time five-piece Night Caller graced the mighty historic King Tut’s in Glasgow on the 13th of April. I have seen this band a good bit now and every set they do is better than their last.
I have followed them on Instagram for a while now and knew they were going to be performing through their funny updates on that platform (. It was only the second time being at King Tut’s for me and it is a special venue to be inside. As you walk up the stairs to get to the venue, the stairs show the prestigious names it has had perform in the four walls. Night Caller headlined and started at 10pm with the supporting artists playing before, which were made up of Electric Shock, MrdB and The Heritage.

When Night Caller started their performance, they started with ‘Toybox’. The song starts with a nifty little bassline and the lyrics suggest opening a box from under a bed. The song isn’t complete without a standout guitar solo either, hypnotizing the crowd whilst doing so. After that, there was ‘Begging for a Heart to Break’. This song is about love, and I love listening to the track on Spotify. The version worked well without the saxophone sounds and just enhanced the guitar even more. In between songs, frontman Danny would give the crowd a bit of patter before battering into another song. You would hear the crowd laugh at his jokes before being drowned out by the next song. ‘Get Right To It’ from their first EP ‘Bedroom Thoughts’ started playing and was a more slowed down song than we had heard yet and watching the crowd they were swaying to the sound, they were definitely feeling it. Next one on the setlist was ‘Baby’s on the Border’ which got the crowd dancing and bobbing along to the track. Their stage presence was strong, and they looked like a proper experienced band that knew how to put on a show.

The second half of their set they had played some unreleased tracks such as ‘Brown Soup’, ‘Drip Dry’, ‘French Kiss’ and ‘Ribs and Meat’ which were all fast tempo and got you feeling right up for it. I especially liked ‘Ribs and Meat’ as it includes an incredibly catchy guitar riff that I have been humming too ever since. The night had to finish on a final song and that was ‘Number One Wee Guy’. This track was the tune that got me recognizing the fun, fast, kinky, chaotic quintet and I have previously reviewed this track.
Now that the set had finished, and the lights came on, we headed downstairs to the bar and
managed to catch up with the band. Speaking to Danny, their vocalist, they hopefully plan on
releasing some tracks soon. I firmly believe this band is one to watch and will be playing many more gigs while making a dent in the music industry.
